Twenty young people, including two from Hall County, were arrested early Saturday morning and charged with underage drinking following a number of complaints about a loud party on Cooks Road in Barrow County.
James Kirkland Abee, 18, of Weaver Road in Gainesville, and Michael MacGregor Durfee, 18, of Bryant Quarter Road in Gillsville, were among those arrested. Others arrested hailed from mostly Barrow and Gwinnett counties.
Neighbors called deputies multiple times between 3:40-4:05 a.m. Saturday complaining of noise coming from a party at a home on Cooks Road. Another resident also called Barrow County deputies to report picking up a 17-year-old Norcross girl walking barefoot on Ga. 211 near Cooks Road and giving her a ride to the Easy Buy store at Ga. 11.
Law enforcement arrived at the home and found a red cattle gate closed across the driveway. Deputies spoke with a 17-year-old girl walking to her car, smelled alcohol on her and arrested her. According to the report, there were beer cans and bottles strewn about the property.
Deputies found more bottles on the back porch, according to the report. A young man asleep on a couch inside did not respond to deputies knocking on the doors.
Cpl. Ernie Ruark pushed on the front door and entered the home. It took several minutes of Ruark shaking the man on the couch before he woke up, according to the report.
Deputies found 12 people hiding in one bedroom and 14 hiding in another. Only 10 could produce identification, according to the report. Four people were older than 21, deputies said, and those younger were required to provide samples for a portable Breathalyzer device.
In all, 20 people were transported to the Barrow County detention center and charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, deputies said.
