A Georgia State Patrol helicopter dropped water Wednesday afternoon on a Lake Lanier island fire that had led to smoke for a few days.

The fire, first reported about noon Sunday, led to smoke that was visible from the American Legion and Thompson Bridge Road.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the fire's cause is unknown. The corps had also previously said it wanted to let the fire burn itself out since it wasn’t a threat to the mainland and it would help clean out “ground fuel” such as leaf clutter and fallen limbs that could later lead to larger fires.
