Yes, it might be sleeting in Gainesville now, but the National Weather Service promises the icy precipitation won’t last long and won’t cause any problems.
"We’re still in the mid to upper 30s, so as the (precipitation) moves in, it’s going to spit a little sleet," said Dan Darbe, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.
But Darbe said any sleet will be short lived, and as more rain moves in, it will be just that — rain.
"We’re way too warm for any kind of accumulations or any kind of problems," he said.
Gainesville residents should expect about 2 inches of rain between today and Friday afternoon, with most of the rain falling between midnight tonight and 7 a.m. Friday, Darbe said. Steady temperatures tonight should keep that rain from freezing.
The forecast for some counties farther north — including White, Towns and Union — calls for light snow and some sleet throughout the rest of the day, but meteorologist Mike Leary said residents should not expect it to stick.
"The ground is just too warm," Leary, of the National Weather Service, said.
As a precaution, however, North Georgia Technical College canceled evening classes on its three campuses in Clarkesville, Blairsville and Toccoa.
