Lula will soon have a new mayor, as businessman Jim Grier defeated four-term mayor Milton Turner, garnering 65.8 percent of the vote Tuesday.

Who is he: Grier, 63, transitioned from engineering management for power companies to a career in real estate. For seven years he chaired the Lula Downtown Development Authority. This was his first run for public office.

How he reacted: “I’m very honored, and my goal is to bring this community together. The word I hear most from the people was that it’s time for a change.”

On the issues: Grier said he hopes to bring a different viewpoint to the table that focuses on planning for growth. He wants to attract more people to Lula by showcasing the city’s community events.

What’s next: In the coming months, Grier will guide the council through its big decision on whether to sell the city’s wastewater treatment system to Hall County.
