The Army Corps of Engineers plans to begin accepting applications Sept. 16 for the remaining boat dock permits on Lake Lanier.

Requests will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis after 8:30 a.m. that day. They can be made only Tuesday-Thursday.

Once reviewed, applicants will have 90 days to submit required documentation.

“Reviews may be placed on hold at any time to ensure the cap on permits is not exceeded, and an appointment does not guarantee a permit will be issued,” states a corps news release.

Lake Lanier’s 2004 Shoreline Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement set the docks limit at 10,615.

The corps had been issuing permits first-come, first-served until drought struck the Southeast in 2007 and drained Lanier to a historic low of 1,050.79 feet above sea level Dec. 26, 2007.

The corps decided in June 2009 to restart issuing permits after the lake’s elevation had stayed consistently above 1,064 feet. Instead of first-come, first-served, though, it went to a lottery system of reviewing and issuing the remaining 187 permits.

“After completion of the lottery, it was determined that additional permits may be issued,” states the corps.

Corps spokeswoman Lisa Parker said the corps has about 50 permits still available.
