Standing out in all of its two-story, Jerusalem limestone glory, Dimo Fine Jewelry’s new building  in Gainesville is wrapping up its construction.

Robert and Missy Dimo, siblings and owners of Dimo Fine Jewelry, said they plan to hold a grand opening in late February.

“We’ve been here for a little over 20 years,” Robert said. “It’s a family investment. Our old building was getting too small to operate in. We could either remodel or build another, so we decided to go bigger.”

Once the new site is finished, Robert said he will demolish the original Dimo Fine Jewelry building, which is located next door on Browns Bridge Road.

Inspired by ancient Roman and Greek architecture, Robert came up with the design for the new building.

The family-owned business will upgrade from its original 3,000-square-foot building to a roughly 15,000 square-foot structure with 30-foot, 9-ton columns.

“If you look at old buildings over a thousand years old, it’s in old Roman style,” Robert said. “They last forever and are still in style. I want my kids and their kids, and their generations to stay in the business.”

With the extra space, Dimo Fine Jewelry will be able to double their amount of products and bring in more brands. The first floor, which is nearly 7,300 square feet, will feature the store’s showroom and repair shop, while the second floor will act as a storage and office space.

Robert said his family didn’t build the larger structure to improve their profit, they wanted to have a nicer building to reflect the high-end brands they carry.

The family’s business dates back to 1960 in Istanbul. Robert’s dad, Cidmon, settled in Gainesville and opened the town’s first Dimo Fine Jewelry in 1995.

“Istanbul is a big city, and we didn’t want to have that same busy lifestyle,” Robert said. “Being next to the water in Istanbul, we wanted something close to the water. Gainesville and the lake was the perfect location.”
