Demolition of old jail may kick-start midtown Gainesville redevelopment

The old Hall County jail is set to be demolished and may spur growth in Gainesville's midtown corridor.
Through a series of walking paths and beautified areas, Gainesville has long been working on a pedestrian network through Midtown. But the city also wants redevelopment of aging properties — a revival of sorts amid old industrial buildings and rundown homes. It’s a renewal that would possess, as City Manager Bryan Lackey puts, a certain “cool factor.”
