A three-block area of downtown Cumming was cleared for a couple hours Thursday morning as authorities examined a suspicious toolbox.

The box, which they eventually determined posed no threat, was found in middle level of the Forsyth County parking deck off East Main Street.

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation bomb squad from Cleveland handled the situation.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Capt. Frank Huggins said the box contained "only junk, tools and nails."

"It presented no threat, however we always have to err on the side of caution in these instances," Huggins said.

The deck, which is next to Dairy Queen, a couple streets and several nearby buildings were cleared in the wake of the discovery.

Sheriff’s deputies diverted traffic approaching East Main and East Maple streets while GBI inspected the toolbox, which Huggins said was found sitting next to a county engineering truck.

"It looked like somebody had placed it there," he said.

The sheriff’s headquarters, nearby attorneys’ offices and Dairy Queen were later evacuated.
