Coroner: Lumpkin 3-year-olds death was accidental drowning

A 3-year-old who disappeared from his Lumpkin County home Wednesday died of an accidental drowning, according to an autopsy completed Thursday.

Charles J. Lewis was reported missing by his mother around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday from his Hemlock Trail home.

Units from Hall, Lumpkin, Dawson, Forsyth and White counties helped search for Charles.

Authorities located the child’s body around 1 p.m. Wednesday in a small pond roughly a quarter-mile from Charles’ home.

The Forsyth County Dive Team retrieved the 3-year-old’s body.

Lumpkin County Coroner Ronald Fortner said Friday that Charles died of an accidental drowning.

No other trauma was seen on the body, Fortner said.
