A Cornelia man with an extensive criminal history was charged over the weekend with vehicular homicide for the second time since 2004.

The same individual was also a passenger in a third vehicular homicide incident in May but wasn't arrested.

Brent Russum, 25, is being held in a White County jail on the most recent charges of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and failure to maintain lane, said Capt. Jim Couch, White County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

These charges were levied after Russum's 2004 Chevrolet 2500 crossed over the center line and collided head on with a 1994 Ford Escort on Asbestos Road on Saturday, Georgia State Patrol officials said.

Russum wasn't seriously injured in the crash, but the other driver, William Lester Craig, 61, was killed. Patrol officials said investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck.

Russum was previously sentenced to three years in prison and seven years of probation stemming from a November 2004 wreck in Banks County.

In that case, Russum was driving on the wrong side of the road "while having methamphetamine in his blood system and while not wearing pants," according to court documents.

He struck another vehicle, killing Steve Dyer and seriously injuring Deane and Maggie Dyer.

He was sentenced on two counts of vehicular homicide, seven counts of serious injury by vehicle and reckless driving.

At the same time, he was also sentenced on charges of theft by receiving for stealing two
motorcycles.

Russum was arrested again in February 2009 on charges of obstructing law enforcement officers in Cornelia.

According to the police report, he was in a house where police found drug paraphernalia, including a "methamphetamine baggie."

When officers began asking occupants questions, Russum reportedly didn't come forward but was instead found "highly intoxicated" and "hiding in the basement level closet listening in on all that was occurring," according to a report. When he didn't cooperate with police, he was arrested.

On May 22 of this year, Russum was one of three passengers in a vehicle that struck a median on Ga. 365 in Habersham County.

Thomas Tyler Ferguson, 20, was killed in the accident but neither Russum nor the driver, Dustin Dodd, 20, were seriously hurt.

Russum wasn't arrested for this incident, but Dodd has been charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, DUI and failure to maintain lane, according to patrol officials.

Last weekend's wreck happened only 34 days later.
