Chapman honored by physicians’ group

Gainesville physician Jack M. Chapman Jr. was awarded the 2009 Joseph P. Bailey Jr., M.D., Physician Distinguished Service Award at the Medical Association of Georgia’s 155th House of Delegates meeting Oct. 16 in Savannah.

The award, first presented in 1960, honors distinguished and meritorious service.

Chapman served as MAG’s president in 2007-2008. In its nomination letter, the Hall County Medical Association said that as president, Chapman "distinguished himself with his hands-on leadership style, always making himself available when the critical issues surfaced. His selfless leadership style and passionate commitment to the private practice of medicine made him the perfect leader during one of the most difficult years in the history of organized medicine."

Chapman is an ophthalmologist at Gainesville Eye Associates. After earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, he received his Doctor of Optometry at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. He earned his degree in medicine at the Medical College of Georgia. He later completed his internship and residency at the MCG Hospital in Augusta.

Chapman is past president of the Hall County Medical Society and has served on the MAG (www.mag.org) as an officer and chairman of the board of directors. He currently is chairman of the Electronic Health Care Committee.

He serves as the president of Health Access Initiative of Gainesville, a community outreach program of the Hall County Medical Society that he helped organize. He also serves on the board of directors of the Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce.

Chapman lives in Gainesville with his wife, Leslie. They have one son.
