The former Hall County Sheriff’s Office employee accused of striking a handcuffed inmate is scheduled for trial next week.
Dustin Charlton, a former jailer with Hall County, was indicted in February on two counts of misdemeanor battery and one count of violation of oath. The case is set to go to trial Monday at 9 a.m., according to the Hall County clerk’s office.
While working in the jail in December 2010, Charlton is accused of hitting an inmate while he was handcuffed. Following an altercation with inmate Mautious Wise, Charlton is accused of striking Wise in the face with his fist.
Judge Bonnie Oliver will preside over the case.
G. Hammond Law III is listed as counsel for Charlton in the case. Attempts to reach Law were unsuccessful.
Charlton also faces other charges from a Sept. 8, 2012, incident at the jail.
Sheriff’s office hosts motorcycle charity ride
The third of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office fundraisers for the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes will get your motor running.
This Saturday, the sheriff’s office will ride with motorcyclists for three hours through Northeast Georgia in its “Thunder in the Mountains” charity event to help needy children.
The first event was the Hot Pursuit 5K, with the most recent being the Brawl in the Hall at the North Hall Community Center.
Riders in the event will tour around the Chattahoochee National Forest, looping back to Laurel Park for a cookout.
Sheriff Gerald Couch said he and his team strive to have at least three events each year for the charity, hoping to have four annually in the near future.
Brawl in the Hall raised more than $6,000, said Deputy Chad Mann, for the Youth Homes charity.
The event starts at 10 a.m. at the Hall County Courthouse. Each driver pays $25 and $5 for each additional rider.
If rain should occur, the makeup date will be Aug. 30.
