The railroad crossing at Athens Street in Gainesville is closing from 12-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

The closure by Norfolk Southern Railroad was announced by the city of Gainesville at about 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday. The crossing is being closed for maintenance, according to RoadSafe Traffic Systems, a contractor for Norfolk Southern. City of Gainesville spokeswoman Nikki Perry said the city was told by the railroad that it was routine maintenance closing the crossing.

The crossing is located near Athens Street’s intersection with E.E. Butler Parkway southeast of downtown Gainesville.

Perry said the city was notified of the closure on Wednesday morning.

The Times has reached out to Norfolk Southern for comment.
