The Faculty Brass Quintet of North Georgia College & State University performed a selection of classical tunes during the Faculty Cooperative Recital on Feb. 21. Selections included Joe Chapman playing "Sonata in D Major" by Mozart, Andrew and Karen Harwood performing the "Allegro" from "Duo Concertante No. 3" by Gambaro, Lois Finlay playing "Etudes in A Flat Major" and John Broman singing "Nessun Dorma" from "Turandot" (Puccini), accompanied by Kathy Duren.

Elbert Cheeks and twin sister Eva Cheeks Stephens of Gainesville celebrated their 80th birthday on Feb. 24 at the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville. Over 100 friends and relatives attended the celebration. The twins' actual birthday is Feb. 20.

Suwanee took home many awards from the 2008 Southeast Festivals and Events Association annual conference, including four gold or first-place awards as well as a second-place recognition. The annual Kaleidoscope Awards took place Feb. 19 in Greenville, N.C. Primrose Schools of Suwanee won Best Sponsor; Kim Towne, volunteer chairwoman on the Suwanee Day planning committee, was recognized as Best Volunteer; Suwanee’s Sail-A-Bration activities at Suwanee Day were awarded Best Event within an Event; and a photograph of Jere Flynt conducting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra during a concert at Town Center Park, taken by Lynne Bohlman DeWilde, Suwanee’s public information officer, won Best Event Photo. Last year’s Suwanee Day T-shirt, with a design created by 2007 Oconee High School graduate Amanda Savage, won a silver award in the Best T-Shirt category.

Gainesville Rotary has announced the following fifth graders as February students of the month for outstanding citizenship and contribution to their school and peers:Leia Rivera of Maranatha Christian Academy, daughter of Michael and Jennifer Rivera; Daisy Carrillo of Sugar Hill Elementary, daughter of Jose and Isabell Carrillo; MacKenzie Satterfield of Flowery Branch Elementary, daughter of Shane and Shonda Satterfield; Oliver Szatkowski of Jubilee Christian Academy son of Tony and Sherri Szatkowski.

Navy Seaman Rachel C. Bryant, daughter of George R. Bryant of Gillsville, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Bryant is a 2007 graduate of Jackson County Comprehensive High School in Jefferson.
