"Julie," the first track of the new EP "Tug O War!" by local rockers Last November, was written not as an ode to a former girlfriend but to win a song placement spot in "Henry Poole is Here," a film starring Luke Wilson.
But Luke Pilgrim, the band’s lead singer, said he’ll tickle the curiosity of fans and possibly keep the title character a mystery.
"In the song I changed the chorus to be about this character Julie," Pilgrim said. "... I didn’t end up getting (the movie slot), but it was a killer verse and structure and we worked it up full band and it ended up rockin’."
That’s as much as he’ll say about Julie, though.
"Sometimes I like to leave a little magic to the song."
But the subjects of the rest of the songs on "Tug O War!" represent the same pull and push of a relationship, sometimes showing how it’s simply a game.
The video for "Julie" which can be seen on YouTube and the band’s Web site, was filmed spontaneously last summer while that band was crossing the California desert.
“We shot it in the desert, which was awesome looking but was terrible shooting conditions,” Pilgrim said. “It was like 110 degrees, dry desert heat ... This was off of old historic Route 66 in this little bitty ghost town called Ludlow, Calif.”
Pilgrim isn’t quite sure when locals can see another Last November performance, but he expects it to be soon.
“We are trying to put together another hometown show, but we aren’t sure of the venue,” he said.
