Whether it’s touring the Smithgall Woods State Park from the comfort of a van or hiking around one of the many trails, the outdoor recreation site has plenty for visitors to do this month.
Park employees will show newcomers around the vicinity during its First Visit Tour from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.
Visitors will learn about Smithgall Woods State Park on a brief walk from the Visitor’s Center and in a van tour through the park. They will see the covered bridge, the famous Dukes Creek and the park’s renowned cottages. Men and women also will learn more about the vital part volunteers play in the park.

The tour costs $5 for a park pass or vehicle.
On that same day, park visitors may participate in the Bags to Baskets program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Visitor’s Center and make a beautiful gift.
Gene Pease will teach a program on making fabric baskets.
Supplies and tools needed include:
- 1-2 yards fabric with a colors you like rather than patterns. Pre-cut fabric into 1-inch to 1 1/2-inch strips
- About 50 plastic shopping bags, bunched in groups of 10
- 1 tapestry or weaving needle with large eye, plastic or metal
- Scissors small and pointed enough to clip threads
- 2 or 3 clothespins
- Lint roller (optional)
- Large Ziplock bag for your materials (optional)
The class will be in the Education Cabin at Smithgall Woods.
Registration is required, due to necessity of materials. Cost is or $30 with materials or $35 without materials. An additional cost of $5 pays for parking.
