This weekend, the Spartan Players of West Hall High School will perform "Seussical," a musical based on the books of Theodor S. Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.

The production — directed by Sarah Lindahl, head of West Hall High's theater department, and Miro Gomez, who teaches chorus and drama at West Hall's middle school — is a collaboration between the two schools. Lindahl and Gomez, who are wife and husband, will guide more than 60 students in the production.

The couple has spent "numerous hours teaching music and directing scenes to ensure an entertaining performance" student Malcom Moon, who will play the Cat in the Hat, wrote in an e-mail.

Moon said choreographer Alison Woodbury, owner of Alicats dance studio in Flowery Branch, staged many of the dance numbers. Student performers Mallory Wilkerson, Lizzy Clements and Moon also pitched in to create some of the choreography.

"Seussical," which debuted on Broadway in 2000, is a sung-through musical based on a compilation of Dr. Seuss stories such as "The Cat in the Hat," "Horton Hears a Who!" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Members of the Spartan Players recently won awards for their skills at the Georgia High School Association's 2010 regional one-act play competition. Suzanna Grindle, who will play Mayzie La Bird, received the award for best actress at the 2009 one-act play competition at the state level.

Moon recently received a full scholarship to Trinity College, where he will major in theater.

"'Seussical' is a musical the whole family can enjoy," Moon wrote. "It explores the powers of imagination that all ages will love and reminds us of the joys of childhood. This production is great, so buy a ticket and don't be late!"

Dr. Seuss would probably agree with Moon: "If you never did, you should. These things are fun and fun is good."
