The Gwinnett Braves scored five unearned runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to shock the Columbus Clippers, 8-5, on Sunday in Columbus.
Two singles, a walk and an error set the scene for G-Braves designated hitter Chris Carter, who delivered with a grand slam into the right-field second deck. He finished 3-for-5 and now has 11 home runs and 51 RBIs on the season.
Carter’s heroics and four scoreless innings from the bullpen bailed out starting pitcher Mike Minor after a rough outing. He lasted only five innings, giving up five runs on six hits and four walks.
Cory Gearrin (2-1) earned the win, working the eighth and ninth innings.
The win leaves Gwinnett (40-36) two games behind first-place Durham in the International League South.
The G-Braves and Clippers meet tonight in the series finale with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Yohan Flande (2-4, 4.45) will get the start for Gwinnett.
