West Hall graduate Juan Arbelaez, who played soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University the past two seasons, was drafted Tuesday by the Montreal Impact in the third round of the Major League Soccer supplemental draft.

Arbelaez, a 5-foot-8, 145 pound midfielder, was The Times’ All-Area Player of the Year as a senior in 2009 and finished his high school career with 51 goals and 70 assists while leading the Spartans to a state finals appearance.

“That’s big news for us,” West Hall athletic director Scott Justus said Wednesday, soon after receiving the news.

After high school the Pereira, Columbia native first played at Georgia Perimeter College — recording eight goals and 11 assists as a freshman — for two seasons before transferring to VCU, where he started 20 of 21 games last season as a senior and recorded four assists for a Rams team that won 12 games, made the NCAA Tournament and finished No. 25 in the NCSAA poll.
