This week: Petit Le Mans highlights busy week

The marathon of motorsports returns to Road Atlanta for the 14th Petit Le Mans endurance race Saturday at the 2.54-mile, 12-turn course in South Hall.

The race is a 1,000-mile or 10-hour race, depending on which comes first. The race begins at 11:15 a.m. and will be shown live on ESPN3.com.

Cars representing Audi, Peugeot, Aston Martin, Toyota, Nissan, Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, Lotus and Jaguar will all be looking to win in the many classifications up for grabs. Last year, Petit Le Mans set a record attendance with 125,000 fans that traveled to the race.

Petit Le Mans is the ninth and final race of the season on the American Le Mans circuit. Currently, there is a tie for the lead in the LMP-1 (Le Mans Prototype) and LMP-2 classes.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: The regular season has already flown by for most schools and it’s time to start talking about region tournament play. After a final regular season game against Westminster on Wednesday, four-time defending Class AA state champion Buford opens the Region 6-AA tournament Saturday at Lovett in Atlanta.

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS: The Yellow Jackets are running the option game to perfection right now with four consecutive wins to open the season, including a 35-28 win against North Carolina to open ACC play last week.

On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets (4-0, 1-0 ACC) visit North Carolina State at 3:30 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS: Riding the momentum of two straight wins, Georgia (2-2) returns home to play host to Mississippi State at noon Saturday at Sanford Stadium.
