This is the week Georgia and Georgia Tech look to cap off the regular season with a bowl victory.

The SEC East champion Bulldogs (11-2) will face Nebraska (10-3) in the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day in Orlando. Georgia was pushed down to the Capital One Bowl after falling to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 1, and missing out on a shot at the National Championship Game.

The Huskers enter the bowl game after a 70-31 loss to Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship game.

The Bulldogs lost in each of their last two bowl showings. Last season, Georgia lost to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl, and in 2010 lost to Central Florida in the Independence Bowl.

Georgia is 7-4 in bowl games all-time under coach Mark Richt.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech (6-7) was granted a waiver to play in the Sun Bowl against Southern Califorina at 2 p.m. today in El Paso, Texas. The Yellow Jackets finished with a losing record in the regular season after a 21-15 loss to Florida State in the ACC Championship Game.

The Trojans (7-5) didn’t live up to expectations this season, and will be without quarterback Matt Barkley, due to a lingering shoulder injury.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: The region schedule for all 20 area schools continues on Tuesday, which will carry teams through to the region tournaments in February. The Lanierland tournament champion North Hall plays host to White County in Region 7-AAA action on Friday in Gainesville.

Also in Region 7-AAA, former Class AA foes Dawson County and East Hall will face one another on Friday in Gainesville.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: The march to the state duals tournaments continues with the two-day Area meets beginning on Friday. Gainesville and Flowery Branch will both compete in the Area 8-AAAAA duals at Clarke Central High in Athens.

In Area 8-AAAA, Chestatee and Lumpkin County both lead the way for the meet at Lumpkin County High.

In Area 4-AAA, Buford, North Hall and Jackson County will all take to the mats at Oconee County High, and in Area 4-AA, Jefferson plays host to the Area tournament.
