Prep roundup: Warriors upset No. 9 Falcons

Flowery Branch’s boys basketball team let an early lead slip away, then couldn’t put away White County late as the Warriors upset the No. 9-ranked Falcons, 66-64 in overtime Saturday night in Flowery Branch.

Tyler Norman, who led all scorers with 28 points, tied the game on a layup with about 30 seconds remaining in regulation, then Adrian Hamilton hit the game-winner in overtime, driving the length of the floor after a missed shot for a layup.

Hamilton finished with 20 points.

Flowery Branch (10-2), which led 18-11 after the first quarter, was led by Izaan Cross with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Barrett added 15 for the Falcons, whose lead was trimmed to three points by halftime.

The Falcons return to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when they travel to West Hall.

Buford girls 57, North Hall 31
The Lady Trojans, ranked No. 9 in Class AAA, suffered their second loss in as many nights Saturday, as Buford — No. 3 in Class AA — rolled to a big win.

Blanche Alverson’s 21 points led the way for the Lady Wolves (11-1), who built a 10-point lead by halftime and put the game out of reach in the second half, when they outscored North Hall 28-12.

Jocelyn Danley added 13 points for Buford, who returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a pivotal Region 6-AA game against Greater Atlanta Christian, the top-ranked team in Class AA.

With a team-high 16 points, Lady Trojans senior Leticia Davenport broke the school’s all-time scoring record, regardless of gender. Entering the game, Davenport needed 11 points to tie Ronnie Hulsey’s mark of 1,586 career points. The Lady Trojans (9-4) will try to get back on track at 6 p.m. Tuesday at White County.

Lakeview girls 33, Athens Academy 31
The Lady Lions won their second straight Friday night in Athens and stayed unbeaten in Region 8-A play.

Megan Rochester scored 10 points to lead Lakeview (3-5, 3-0).

The Lady Lions’ next game is set for Tuesday against Commerce.

Landmark Christian girls 53, Chestatee 40
A 15-point effort from Kasey Smith wasn’t enough to push the Lady War Eagles to a win Saturday night in Fairburn.

Chestatee returns to the court at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lumpkin County.

Jefferson boys 57, Social Circle 39
The Dragons jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a home win Saturday night.

Cody Smith led a balanced scoring attack for the Dragons with 11 points. Chris Beck, Darius Minor and Demitri Robinson added nine each for Jefferson (5-8).

Todd Hardge led Social Circle with 20 points.

The Dragons play next at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Commerce.

Athens Academy boys 77, Lakeview 65
David Pruett scored 21 and Colin King added 19 for the Lions, but it was enough to pull off a win on the road Saturday night.

The Spartans turned a three-point lead into a 15-point cushion by the midway point and held off Lakeview (6-7) for the win.

Joey Miller led Athens Academy with 17 points.

The Lions return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they play host to Commerce.

Buford boys 54, North Hall 51
The Wolves trailed by two entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the Trojans 14-9 in the final stanza to take the win Saturday night at North Hall.

Twoey Hosch and Jeramie Moore scored 10 each for Buford (6-5), while Ryan Reeves and Melvin Harris both chipped in with eight.

Josh Haymore and Drew Hill each scored nine to lead North Hall (8-4).

Buford gets back on the court Tuesday when it travels to play at Greater Atlanta Christian.

Chestatee boys 67, Landmark Christian 40
After trailing at halftime, the War Eagles took over in the final two quarters, outscoring Landmark Christian 43-10 and turning a nailbiter into blowout with a strong defensive effort.

Chestatee senior Parker Smith led all scorers with 33 points and Branden Jovaag added 11 points for the War Eagles (12-3).

Chestatee returns to action Tuesday at Lumpkin County.
