Gainesville boys pull off upset over No. 1 seed North Atlanta

Gainesville junior D’Marcus Simonds scored 33 points and knocked down a game-winning shot at the buzzer in overtime for a 56-54 win against North Atlanta in the opening round of the Class AAAAA state tournament on Thursday.

With less than six seconds in overtime, Simonds knocked down the basket off the backboard, sending the Red Elephants into a second-round game against Jones County on Saturday in Gray. Game time is still to be determined.

After calling a timeout to set up the final play, Messiah Dorsey passed to K.J. Buffen on the inbound, and promptly tossed it back to an open Dorsey near the sideline. After getting the ball back, Dorsey spotted an open Simonds near the 3-point line.

About two feet inside the arc, Simonds shot it up and through the net off the backboard without hitting rim.

Buffen finished the game with 11 points. He made all four of his free throw attempts in extra time for Gainesville.

Simonds scored 17 of the Red Elephants (25-5) 23 points in the third, after trailing by 10 at halftime.

DAWSON COUNTY GIRLS 71, ELBERT COUNTY 35: Sheyenne Seabolt led the top ranked and undefeated Lady Tigers (28-0) with 19 points in the opening round of the Class AAA state tournament on Thursday in Dawsonville. With the win, Dawson County moves on to the second round and hosts Dodge County at 6 p.m. Saturday in Dawsonville.

In the playoff opener, Karlie Bearden scored 15 points and Haley Burgess added 11 for the Lady Tigers. Ashley Parker finished the game with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Dawson County cruised after building a 20-5 lead through the first quarter.
