The Buford High softball team won its third consecutive Class AA softball state title at the South Commons Softball Complex on Saturday in Columbus.

The Lady Wolves (25-5) dropped the first game of the day against Rockmart, 2-0, before rebounding in the deciding Game 2 with a 9-0 win against the same team.

Buford’s loss to start the day was its first postseason loss since 2006.

“It was certainly a tough day but we managed to get the job done,” Buford coach Tony Wolfe said. “Winning this state title is a tremendous source of pride for our program.

“I’m happy for our players, our school and our community as a whole.”

Karly Fullem picked up the win in the championship game for Buford with nine strikeouts, while allowing two hits.

“I thought Karly threw better today than she had all year,” Wolfe added. “She had a look in her eyes that she wasn’t going to be denied.

“She was lights out for us today.”

Alysha Rudnik led the Lady Wolves offensively with three hits, including a first-inning solo home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Buford finished the five inning game with 12 hits.

Lexi Overstreet also finished the game with three hits and a pair of RBIs for Buford. Fullem and Madison Wynegar each added run scoring hits for the Lady Wolves.

In the first game against Rockmart, Chelsie Thomas had a pair of hits for Buford.
