One more step.

That is the mantra wrestling athletes around the state will have bouncing around their heads today and tomorrow as they scrap for their spot in the state tournament.

Now, the mindset turns from a team concept of scoring points to an individual concept, with each vying for a top-eight finish.

“It’s a little more self-centered,” said North Hall coach Stuart Cunningham. “Each person cares a little more about themselves than the team.”

North Hall, who was third at the Class AAAA team duals in mid-January, has 11 wrestlers who will be in Dublin this weekend, seven of which have moved on to the state tournament in previous seasons.

The Trojans will be missing just three weight classes when the tournament starts today at 4 p.m.

While the team duals was built on points and strategic wrestling, now the athletes will be solely looking for a way to win their match and move on.

“I really like to think about taking it one match at a time,” said West Hall senior Jesse Bridgewater. “You can’t worry about how high you’re going to finish in the tournament until you win that first match. One big thing our coach always says is, ‘Always score the next point.’”

The Spartans, including Bridgewater, have four wrestlers moving on to Morgan County High for their sectional tourney.

East Hall has seven who will be wrestling this weekend.

Bridgewater said the wrestlers don’t change anything in their preparation for this week compared to any other.

“We’re still going full-speed and all, but, at this point, it’s fine-tuning the machine,” he said. “You’re not going to learn anything new the last couple of weeks.”

Other area schools competing in the Class AAA-A Sectional are Jefferson with 13 wrestlers, Dawson County with nine, Banks County with seven, Lumpkin County with 13 and Jackson County with 11.

Joining North Hall in the Class AAAA-A Sectional, Chestatee will have seven wrestlers, Johnson will have five and Buford will send 11.

Closing out local schools with wrestlers competing in Class AAAA, White County will have five mixed in the bracket, including two freshmen.

Riverside Military Academy will have five wrestlers competing in the Class AA-A Sectional hosted by Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross. The Eagles will have a trio of seniors accompanied by a pair of sophomores trying to make one of the top four spots to move on to state.

Flowery Branch and Gainesville will be wrestling in the Class AAAAA-A Sectional tournament at Lanier High in Sugar Hill.

The Falcons will have four athletes on hand, while the Red Elephants will have six in the mix.

Habersham Central will be wrestling in the Class AAAAAA-A Sectional at Mill Creek High in Hoschton.

The Raiders will send five wrestlers, including junior Andrew Burpee who won the school’s first wrestling state title in 2014 as a freshman.

The talent at the sectional tournaments is the best among regions across the state. While the level of competition is higher, the athletes just have to simplify the process.

“There’s definitely going to be tougher competition here, but you just have to think that they put on their singlet the same way you do,” Bridgewater said. “You just have to go out there and scrap with them.”

Those who advance will move on to the Infinite Energy Arena, formerly the Arena at Gwinnett Center, in Duluth for the state tournament. That event will be held Feb. 11-13.
