ATLANTA — The Braves placed right-hander Tommy Hanson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 7, with right shoulder tendinitis Sunday.
Atlanta activated catcher Brian McCann from the disabled list. McCann, returning from a strained left oblique, started in Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
The Braves also activated right-hander Scott Linebrink (lower back strain) from the 15-day DL and optioned right-hander Anthony Varvaro to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Hanson allowed seven runs, including four home runs, in 3 1-3 innings in an 11-7 loss at the New York Mets on Aug. 6. An MRI on his shoulder after the start showed the tendinitis but no structural damage.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he wanted to give Hanson more time to recover from the soreness. He said the right-hander had no new problems but had not yet thrown in the bullpen.
"I think it's just the right thing to do, give him a breather, give him a little extra time," Gonzalez said.
"Sometimes you just have to let that thing rest a little bit."
Gonzalez said right-hander Randall Delgado would be recalled from Gwinnett to start Tuesday against San Francisco. Delgado gave up seven hits and four runs, three earned, in a 6-2 loss to Texas in his debut with Atlanta on June 17.
Delgado, one of the Braves' top pitching prospects, began the season with Double-A Mississippi. In two starts with Gwinnett, Delgado has two wins, allowing only six hits and no runs with 15 strikeouts in 13 innings.
Right-hander Jair Jurrjens (right knee strain) is eligible to come off the disabled list Wednesday. Jurrjens threw in the bullpen Friday and again on Sunday.
The Braves gave third baseman Chipper Jones a day off. Martin Prado moved from left field to start at third base. Right fielder Jason Heyward, hitting only .218, made his first start since Wednesday.
