Gainesville police are investigating what they call a suspicious death after a body was found Friday night near a Gainesville apartment complex.
Police said they were called to the Lake Lanier Club apartments on Dawsonville Highway between 7:30 and 7:45 p.m. Friday after the body was found in a wooded area near the shore of the lake.
Officials would not comment on the condition or gender of the body, nor whether any identification was found.
Bystanders said a man walking on a trail next to the apartments near the lake found the body. They described the victim as a young female.
Police had issued an alert earlier in the day seeking information on a missing teenage girl.
Hannah Truelove, 16, was last seen Thursday morning near Lake Lanier Club apartments, a news release said.
Law enforcement officials late Friday would not confirm the connection between the body found and the missing girl until they could investigate further.
Gainesville police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said the investigation was hampered Friday by the darkness and rough terrain of the area behind the complex.
“It does make it challenging for us as far as any investigative purposes,” Holbrook said.
