A proposed 188-townhome development off Atlanta Highway/Ga. 13 was given the Oakwood Planning Commission’s OK Monday night.
McKinley Homes US LLC’s request to annex and rezone the 36.22 acres at 3557 Atlanta Highway now goes before the Oakwood City Council.
The property is across from Dollar General store and near Cresthill Drive.
The planning board gave its approval June 17 based on several conditions, including that roads in the development become city streets. City ordinance forbids parking on streets.
An official with McKinley Homes told the board that the project would be built out over nine years and that homes would be at least 800 square feet in size.
Also, lots at the front entrance to the project would be reserved for commercial development.
The vacant property is now zoned Hall County agricultural-residential and highway business, with the developer seeking Oakwood moderate-density residential and highway business rezoning.
The property’s “shape, size and topography substantially limit the ability to develop (highway business) uses which require more expansive, relatively flat area,” McKinley’s application states.
