Gainesville police charged a man with false imprisonment and two counts of aggravated sodomy after a lengthy overnight standoff at Orchard Brook Apartments.
Police arrived at the complex off McEver Road shortly after midnight Sunday to reports of a domestic disturbance, said police Lt. Carol Martin.
Upon arrival, a woman ran from the apartment and was helped by officers.
Police then saw a man at the apartment door with a handgun. Upon seeing the officers, he shut the door and fired his weapon through the window of the apartment, Martin said.
Police surrounded the apartment and checked to see if neighboring apartments were occupied. The apartments were empty.
Authorities contacted the suspect, Christopher Stringer, 33, by cell phone and, after more than four hours, was able to persuade him to leave the apartment and surrender the weapon.
He was taken into custody at 4:45 a.m. without incident, Martin said.
The woman was taken to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was treated and later released.
