Chocolates melt and roses die, but there are some Valentine’s Day gifts that can endure.

If you are looking for an unusual gift, consider purchasing a tree in your loved one’s honor from the Jefferson Heritage Tree Council.

The trees are on sale through Friday and include an engraved marker with that special someone’s name, along with a card explaining the gift to your loved one.

"This is the third year that we’ve done the (Valentine’s Day) gift tree sale and we’ve sold about 20 trees each year," said Mary Dugan, tree council chairperson.

"The ($110 for the gift tree) covers the cost of the actual tree, the engraved marker and maintenance for the first year."

Through the gift tree program and additional donations, the tree council has planted around 80 trees in Curry Creek Park in Jefferson.

All of the Valentine’s Day gift trees will be planted on Arbor Day, Feb. 20, Dugan says.

"We’ve discussed planting the next group of gift trees at the north end of (Curry Creek Park), near Jefferson Lake," Dugan said.

Since the council was created several years ago, the group has planted many different types of trees around Jefferson.

"We like to give people options, but we prefer the trees to be native to Georgia and provide some wildlife benefit. A lot of people request things like oak trees. People love the oaks for their strength, character and longevity," said Dugan. "Once we take in the funds, we check the prices and availability of different types of trees at several nurseries. We like to plant a variety of things unless there is a request for a specific type of tree."

While gifting a tree is an unusual token of affection, Dugan said trees make a great gift.

"A tree is a very thoughtful and lasting gift that makes a strong impression to your loved one," she said. "On top of all of that, you are doing something great for the environment that we all share."
