A spotty grass fire caused a lane of Interstate 985 at the Hall/Gwinnett county line to be shut down for a while Wednesday night.

The 100-yard fire that was reported about 6:15 p.m. was possibly caused by an exhaust pipe on a stranded vehicle, said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services public information officer.

There was no damage to the vehicle and no structures were threatened, he said. Firefighters from Hall and Gwinnett counties worked together to quickly extinguish the flames, he said.

A HERO unit temporarily closed one of the southbound lanes.
