A Saturday night house party in Gainesville spun out control when a fight broke out and moved into the street, where a man was shot to death.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office, still investigating the incident, has charged Valentin Garcia, 39, of Gainesville, with murder.

Deputies responding to a fight call just after 11 p.m. Saturday discovered the body of Santamaria Avelar, 26, in the street in front of 1330 Patterson Drive, Col. Jeff Strickland said in a news release early Sunday.

The resident was having a party with a large number of guests when the fight broke out, said Strickland, who couldn't be reached later for comment.

Deputies were able to identify Garcia as the suspect. He was tracked to a hotel in Douglasville, off Interstate 20, where he barricaded himself in the hotel room and refused to cooperate.

The Douglas County SWAT team was called in and was able to take Garcia into custody at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday without incident.

Strickland said the incident does not appear to be gang related and is not connected with a gang homicide several weeks ago.
