They called it stormy Monday, but today shouldn’t be as bad.

After suffering through a soggy first day of the work week, Gainesville residents can expect some sunshine today, according to the National Weather Service.

Granted, the sunshine will come with a bite.

Monday’s rain ushered in a weak cold front that could keep temperatures from getting any higher than 50 degrees today, meteorologist Sean Ryan said. Winds could gust as high as 25 miles per hour today, he said, adding to the cold.

But warmer — and more seasonal — temperatures should return Wednesday and continue until Friday.

Ryan said Thanksgiving Day should be mostly sunny, with a forecast high of around 58 that is right around average for this time of year. That should make it a great day for tossing around a football or taking a walk to work off that Thanksgiving feast.

As of Monday night, the forecast called for a chance of rain Thursday night, but Ryan said it’s unlikely that significant rain will impede holiday travelers until Friday or Saturday. The only area in the Southeast likely to see rain Thursday night is the Texas and Louisiana coast, he said.

For a full day of gray, Monday’s scattered showers did not bring a lot of rain. The wet weather netted less than a half inch of rainfall at Gainesville’s Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.

"After this, it looks like we may get another round of rain by Friday that could be a little heavier," Ryan said.

The forecast for Gainesville calls for a 60 percent chance of rain Friday and into Saturday.
