Registration is under way for the seventh annual Business Police Academy sponsored by the Gainesville Police Department. Class begin Sept. 8.
The academy is targeted to business owners, managers and employees. Participants must be at least 21 years old and will be subject to a background check.
The 11-week course will include information especially beneficial to business owners.
"The lessons will include education on shoplifting prevention, identity theft, credit card fraud, counterfeit money, and criminal investigations," Academy organizer and Crime Prevention Officer Joe Britte said. " Participants will also learn about robbery prevention, court room procedures and testimony."
The registration deadline is Aug. 21. Applications are available on the city Web site at www.gainesville.org; at the Police Department on Jesse Jewell Parkway; or by calling Britte at 770-287-0893.
Training sessions set by UGA small business center
The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center has scheduled training seminars for businesses owners in August.
A Quick Books Series is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 and 13 at the SBDC offices, 999 Chestnut St., Gainesville.
The Starting a Business workshop is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. at the Gainesville SBDC offices. Topics for discussion include the traits of successful entrepreneurs, market research, legal structures for your business, estimating start-up costs and cash flow projections, financing alternatives, failure factors and business planning. The fee is $69.
Retail Savvy, part of the Lunch and Learn Series, is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 19 and 26 and Sept. 2 and 9 at The Ballard House, 181 Larkin St., Cornelia. The four-part series will help with retail principles covering point of sale information, current retail trends, product marketing and advertising strategy, and retail security. Each class is $39, $99 for the whole series.
