The smarts of the Gainesville High School Academic Bowl Team will be showcased on WSB-TV Channel 2 Sunday when its competition against longtime rival St. Pius X Catholic High School airs.

The Sunday broadcast revisits the Dec. 15 High-Q showdown at the Channel 2 studios in Atlanta. In the High-Q competition, two teams of four students are quizzed on history, literature, pop culture, geography and science.

Sally Jackson, an English teacher at Gainesville High who co-coaches the team, said the St. Pius X match was the team’s second round of competition this year. If the team wins in its next round in February, the Gainesville students will make it to the final four in the North Georgia competition.

Jackson said the team has been doing well so far.

“Our team is so well-rounded that they really don’t have a whole lot of problems because each person has an area of expertise,” she said. “They answer questions that amaze me.”

Gainesville High students Taylor Hall, Shelley Farmer, Josh Chester and Isaac Hopkins are on the team. Sophomore Eleanor Walker is the alternate player.

Gainesville school board member Sammy Smith said Gainesville High alumni are invited to a buffet lunch at the Gainesville Elks Club at 12:30 on Sunday to watch the High-Q broadcast.

The buffet is $10.95 with coffee provided by St. Ives Coffee Roasters.

“Given the rivalry between the two schools started 40 years ago when the Golden Lions beat us in the state football championship, this should be fun,” Smith said.
