One passenger died Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Ga. 365 and Howard Road in Gainesville.
The driver of the vehicle was airlifted by helicopter to an Atlanta hospital.
The crash occurred when the driver of a green Toyota sedan attempted to cross Ga. 365 from the RaceTrac gas station on Howard Road, said Cpl. Joe Britte, a spokesman for the Gainesville Police Department. The Toyota struck the rear driver’s side of a maroon Kia Sorento, which was traveling southbound on Ga. 365.
The collision caused the Kia to overturn and flip several times, finally colliding with a guard rail.
Officials originally thought the passenger who died was ejected. The Kia’s driver meanwhile was trapped in the car until rescued by first responders, who included personnel from the Gainesville Fire Department and Hall County Fire Services.
“On further investigation, all occupants were properly restrained,” Britte said.
The passenger, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Britte said.
The status of the driver is not yet available.
The driver of the Toyota did not appear injured.
Britte said charges are pending.
