North Hall High School's debate team recently placed at a tournament at Lakeview Academy in Gainesville. Teams from Lakeview, Gainesville High School, Lee County High School and Sequoia High School also competed.

North Hall sophomore Rachel Glazer placed first in Dramatic Interpretation, and Rachel and senior Eli LoCicero placed first in Duo Interpretation. Junior Frema Awuku placed fourth in Humorous Interpretation and fifth in Impromptu.

The cadets at Jefferson High School's Junior ROTC program celebrated the U.S. Air Force's 62nd birthday on Sept. 18. Before its creation with the signing of the National Security Act of 1947, the Air Force was part of the U.S. Army as the Army Air Corps.

In keeping with tradition, the youngest member of the unit, Jordan Schneider, and oldest member, Miguel Rodriguez, cut the cake.

Jennifer Whitehead of Gainesville was named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale with a minimum of 14 credit hours.

Whitehead is the daughter of Harry and Janice Whitehead and a graduate of Lakeview Academy in Gainesville.
