Want to learn a little bit about India without cracking a book?
Then Evening of India is for you.
Students from the Brenau merchandising class have organized an evening filled with raffles, food and fun to benefit Rahab’s Rope, a local nonprofit aimed at reducing human trafficking out of India.
Courtney Hawkins, one of the student organizers, said the owners of Rahab’s Rope will be on hand for a presentation of the organization’s mission.
Jewelry and clothing from the nonprofit’s store, located on the square in downtown Gainesville, will be for sale with all proceeds going to fund the organization’s latest effort — apartments in India for victims of human trafficking.
Human trafficking, Hawkins said, is “more prevalent in areas we don’t think about, like Atlanta. It’s kind of scary.”
And according to Hawkins, there will be a henna tattoo station where, for a donation, attendees can try a less committed form of body art.
She also recommends checking out the jewelry for anyone looking for a unique Mother’s Day gift.
While the evening is a learning experience for the students, Hawkins said she hopes everyone will leave with a better awareness about human trafficking and the plight of India’s young women.
“We want to let people know that there are places like this (Rahab’s Rope) right on the square in Gainesville.”
