Brenau University soccer coach Michael F. Lochstampfor was promoted to athletic director of the university on Friday.

Lochstampfor will replace Gordon Leslie, who has served as athletic director and as Brenau’s tennis coach since June 2005. Leslie is scaling back his duties to prepare for retirement.

Lochstampfor’s new duties include developing a new minor in sports management for the 2009-10 academic year. It will be part of Brenau’s College of Business and Mass Communications. Many of the university’s athletes and non-athletes have already expressed interest in the program.

Lochstampfor has coached Golden Tigers’ soccer team since 2002, where he has a 86-78 overall record. His 2008 team finished third in the Southern States Athletic Conference with an 11-6-1 record, the best all-time at Brenau. He will continue to hold the position.

Before joining Brenau, Lochstampfor spent six years coaching soccer at Oglethorpe Universty. He has also coached at Reinhardt College and Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he earned his Masters of Science in exercise science. He also holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in physical education and French from Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Additionally, Lochstampfor will step down as the director of the 500-member Brenau Fitness Center. This role will be assumed by assistant softball coach and strength coach Gary Hatfield, who is also a Hall County firefighter and retired competition weightlifter.

Leslie will continue his role as Brenau tennis coach and will also assist in developing programs around Brenau’s Smithgall Tennis Complex.
