Prep scoreboard: Flowery Branch girls stun Gainesville in shootout

The Lady Falcons (4-2, 3-0 Region 7B-AAA) remained unbeaten in region play with a 3-2 shootout win over No. 12 ranked Gainesville on Friday night in Flowery Branch.

Laura Demby led the Lady Red Elephants (3-3) with two goals, but Flowery Branch evened the score with goals from Kait Erhard and Ali Wellborn.

In the shootout, Falcons goalkeeper Angelica Escarte stopped Gainesville’s fifth shot attempt, giving Flowery Branch’s Lindsey Porter the opportunity to score the go-ahead goal to win the shootout 5-4.

The Falcons play host to North Forsyth at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Red Elephants travel to White County at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Flowery Branch boys 3, Gainesville 0

The Falcons (7-0) kept their undefeated season alive with a win over Gainesville on Friday night in Flowery Branch.

Steven Brett, David Patino and Philip Abrahamsen each scored for Flowery Branch. Zach Clark recorded his fourth shutout of the season in goal.

Flowery Branch plays host to North Forsyth at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Buford girls 13, Hebron Christian 0

Maria Petroni scored three goals and had five assists and Katie Garth scored four goals and had one assist for the Lady Wolves (3-1-1, 1-0 Region 6A-AA) in their win over Hebron Christian Academy on Friday night.

Haley Holderfield added three goals, Katherine Roadcap scored two goals and Natalya Jones scored one goal for Buford. Abby Leiker also contributed on offense with three assists.

Rachel Kaplan earned her second shutout of the season, making three saves in goal for the Lady Wolves.

Buford travels to Providence Christian at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Johnson girls 1, North Oconee 0

Coco Perez scored the go-ahead goal off of a penalty kick for the Lady Knights (3-2) as Johnson defeated North Oconee on Friday night in Oakwood.

Liz Martinez earned the shutout, making 11 saves in goal.

The Lady Knights play host to West Forsyth at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Chestatee boys 2, Alcovy 0

Alejandro Gonzalez scored the first goal for the War Eagles (3-1, 1-0 Region 7A-AAA) on Friday night in Gainesville.

Zack Mills followed up with a second goal from 40 yards out to seal the win for Chestatee.

Tyler Esson and Joaquin Maldonado combined for the shutout, stopping six shots.

Chestatee plays host to Lumpkin County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Chestatee girls 3, Rabun Gap 2

The Lady War Eagles (2-2) overcame a first-half deficit to defeat Rabun Gap on Friday night in Rabun Gap.

Jazmyn Williams and Jesse Greener each scored in the first half for the Lady Eagles, giving Rabun Gap the early lead. Daniela Sotelo scored Chestatee’s only goal of the half.

In the second half, Megan Fligg and Kelsey Neukum each scored, sealing the win for the Lady War Eagles.

Chestatee plays host to Lumpkin County at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Lakeview Academy girls 6, Towns County 0

Anna Marchman scored two goals for the Lions (1-2) in their win over Towns County on Friday night in Gainesville.

Lakeview also scored on goals from Chelsea Waddell, Jilly Pascual, Brianna Holcomb and Maddie Haymore.

Ivy Godfrey and Brittany Moore combined for the shutout in goal for the Lions.

Lakeview plays host to Athens Academy at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Towns County boys 2, Lakeview Academy 1

The Indians scored with seven minutes remaining in the second half to edge past Lakeview Academy on Friday night in Gainesville.

Austin White scored the lone goal for the Lions (0-2) off a pass from Nicolai Lunde.

Lakeview plays host to Athens Academy at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

North Hall boys 2, Athens Academy 1

Alex Castrejon scored both goals for the Trojans (2-2-1) in their win over Athens Academy on Friday night in Athens.

Daniel Powers made eight saves in goal for North Hall.

The Trojans play host to West Hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

North Hall girls 5, Athens Academy 0

The Lady Trojans (3-0-1) stayed unbeated on the season with a win over Athens Academy on Friday night in Athens.

Bradee Burrell scored two goals and had one assist for North Hall. Julia Matthews assisted on both of Burrell’s goals and added one of her own.

Tess Patton and Laura Lane also score one goal each for the Lady Trojans. Mary Mancin recorded her third shutout in goal.

North Hall plays host to West Hall at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

East Hall girls 7, Gilmer 0 (Thursday)

Patricia Castrejon scored three goals for the Lady Vikings (3-2) in their win over Gilmer on Thursday night in Ellijay.

East Hall also got two goals from Christina Davis and one each from Deci Garza and Casey Padilla.
Diana Hernandez made three saves in goal in the shutout.

The Lady Vikings play host to Rabun County at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

East Hall boys 7, Social Circle 0 (Thursday)

The Vikings (5-2) scored six goals in the first half en route to a shutout win over Social Circle on Thursday night in Gainesville.

East Hall plays host to Rabun County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

West Hall boys 6, Dawson County 2 (Thursday)

Rudy Vazquez scored three goals in the first seven minutes of play and later added an assist in the Spartans’ win over Dawson County on Thursday night.

Juan Arbelaez scored two goals and had three assists and Tino Vazquez had one goal for the West Hall. Gerson Mejia also added two assists.

The Spartans (2-2-2) travel to North Hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

BASEBALL

Buford 20, Gainesville 9

Jaytee Swanson led the Wolves (1-0) with a home run, three RBIs and a 4-for-5 night at the plate in their season opener on Friday night at Ivey-Watson Field. Cameron Crawford finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs for Buford.

Zach Thellman connected on a two-run home run for the Red Elephants (0-1). Justin Fordham, Sloan Strickland and Blaine Martin each finished with two hits for Gainesville.

Buford visits Flowery Branch at 1 p.m. today in the Flowery Branch Invitational at the Hog Mountain Sports Complex. Gainesville visits Statesboro at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night at Georgia Southern University.

Banks County 7, Elbert County 3

After trailing through four innings, the Leopards battled back in the final three innings to defeat Elbert County Friday night in Homer.

Alex Gailey led Banks County at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored. Zack Dale also contributed, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Leopards play host to Jefferson at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Lumpkin County 12, Dawson County 11

The Tigers (1-1) scored five runs in the fifth inning, but were unable to finish their rally over Lumpkin County on Friday night in Dawsonville.

Devin Dunson led the Indians (2-0) at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Lumpkin County’s Sunny Phan was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Chad Fulton and Drew Uptegraph each went 2-for-3.

Jacob Barr went 4-for-4 with two doubles for Dawson County.

The Indians visit Forsyth Central at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

TENNIS 

Gainesville boys 5, Pickens 0 (Thursday)

Andreo Belch, James Wassel and Ryan Joiner each won singles matches for the Red Elephants (4-0) in their win over Pickens on Thursday in Gainesville.

In doubles matches, the teams of Luis Hokayem/Robbie Bilbrough and Graham Williams/Drew Denning each won to complete the sweep for Gainesville.

The Red Elephants travel to Johnson at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
