Gainesville High edges North Hall in title match for Hall County volleyball championship

The Gainesville High volleyball program edged North Hall 29-27, 25-23 to claim the Hall County volleyball championship on Saturday in Gainesville.

The Lady Red Elephants claimed their first Hall County title with Sydney King earning match point with a kill. Gainesville earned a spot in the championship match with a 25-15, 25-9 win against Lakeview Academy in the semifinals of the eight-team field.

For Gainesville, King finished the day with 52 digs and five aces, while Savannah Roys had 90 assists, 13 kills, 16 aces, 46 digs and three blocked shots. Also for the Lady Red Elephants, Abby Alexander chipped in 37 kills, nine aces and three blocks.

Bessie Winston finished with 20 kills for Gainesville, while Caroline Mercer had 21 digs. In pool play to open the day, the Red Elephants beat East Hall (25-12, 25-19), Johnson (25-15, 25-14) and Flowery Branch (25-18, 25-14).

North Hall made the championship match with a 25-21, 25-13 win against East Hall in the semifinals. The Lady Trojans won in pool play against West Hall (25-6, 25-10), Chestatee (25-11, 25-15) and Lakeview Academy (24-26, 25-17, 15-7).

Lily Paschall led the Lady Trojans with 81 assists, 18 aces, 13 kills and 39 digs, while Amanda Tucker finished with 40 kills, 31 digs and a pair of aces. Also for North Hall, Melissa DeVerter chipped in 41 kills, 19 blocks and 30 digs.

Lakeview Academy earned third place with a 25-10, 25-23 win against East Hall. For the Lady Lions, Mary Evelyn Brock had 26 kills and 33 digs. Also for the Lady Lions, Sadie Thrailkill had 24 kills, and Anna McClendon finished with 37 digs.

Also for Lakeview Academy, Gracie Caudell earned her 1,000th-career assist during tournament play.

Leaders for East Hall included Savannah Thellman with four aces, seven kills, 17 digs and 60 assists, and Summer Lindsey chipped in an ace, one assist and 69 digs. Also for East Hall, Tessa Rider had six aces, a blocked shot, 47 digs, and 14 kills.

Minette Maldonado had seven aces, a blocked shot, 30 kills and 34 digs.

Lakeview Academy beat Chestatee and West Hall in pool play. East Hall beat Flowery Branch and Johnson in pool play.

Leaders for Johnson included Grace Eidson with nine aces, 40 kills, four blocked shots, 41 digs and 50 assists; Alivia Farley with seven aces, 21 kills, 30 digs and 49 assists; and Emma Hernandez with 10 aces, 24 kills and five blocked shots.

Madelynn Woodard led Chestatee with seven aces, 12 kills, two assists and 32 digs. Also for the Lady War Eagles, Nicole Sedwick chipped in two aces, six kills, four assists, 12 digs and four blocked shots.
