Brenau University’s softball program won Pool A and advanced to the next stage of the NAIA Softball National Championship with a 2-0, eight-inning win over top-ranked Concordia (Calif.) on Saturday in Gulf Shores, Ala..
Brenau will play Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.), at 11 a.m. Monday, the first day of double-elimination bracket play.
Golden Tigers pitcher Anna Maness blanked the Eagles on five hits in eight innings of work, striking out six and walking one to beat Concordia’s Katie Cotta in an extra-inning pitcher’s duel.
Sally Duggan led Brenau at the plate, finishing the day 2 for 3, and Taylor Kelly drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth for the Golden Tigers.
After Concordia failed to score in the bottom of the seventh with runners at the corners and one out, Brenau took advantage in the top of the eighth. With two outs and a runner at first, Duggan was hit by a pitch to make it first and second with two outs. Then, Kelly stepped up to the plate and stroked a two-run double to deep left-center.
Maness came back out to the circle and sat the Eagles down in order to seal the win.
