Brenau softball goes 2-0 to remain undefeated in national tournament

The Brenau University softball team went 2-0 on Monday to remain undefeated in tournament play at the NAIA Softball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Golden Tigers defeated No. 18 Auburn University-Montgomery 4-0 and No. 4 Central Baptist College 8-4 for their fifth win in the double elimination tournament. With the win, the Golden Tigers will advance to play Shorter College, also undefeated in tournament play, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Jenny Shepard (16-5) earned the win for the Golden Tigers against AUM, pitching a seven-inning complete game and allowing just two hits with five strikeouts. Katie Bolin had a double with one RBI for Brenau, and Tiffany Schandera and Lana Lazar each went 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Brenau defeated Central Baptist thanks to a five-run first inning. Seven of the first eight Golden Tigers hitters reached safely, including four straight singles from Shepard, Ellen Black, Sally Duggan and Taylor Kelley that produced three runs.

Black finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a home run, while Duggan went 3 for 3 with two runs scored for Brenau. Anna Maness earned the win for the Golden Tigers, pitching a seven-inning complete game, allowing just five hits with seven strikeouts.
