The Brenau University softball team slugged by Bethany College 7-1 on Thursday in the team’s opening game in Pool A play at the NAIA softball national championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Golden Tigers pitcher Jenny Shepherd improved to 15-5 on the year with a four-hit, complete-game win in the circle. She struck out five batters and walked two.
After a Sally Duggan solo homer in the second frame, Brenau put the game away with four runs in the third. Ellen Black blasted a three-run home run to center field, which sent Bethany, and starting pitcher Jennifer Garcia, to a loss in its first tournament appearance. Garcia allowed five runs, four earned, in just three innings of work before being relieved.
Shepherd was one of Brenau’s leading hitters as well, going 2 for 3 with one RBI and one run scored. Duggan finished 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Brenau continues Pool A play at 3:30 p.m. today against Talladega in Gulf Shores.
