West Hall running back Kwon Williams charges through the Chestatee defense for a big gain on the Spartans' first possession Friday night during their game at War Eagle Stadium.

Difference maker: Jacob Satterfield. Even on a night where the run game was smooth, Satterfield was calm and composed, spreading the ball out to a variety of points on the field. His two passing touchdowns in the first quarter set the tempo of the game.

Stat that matters: The War Eagles were held to just 20 total rushing yards in the first half, nearly half of which came from quarterback Yarbrough, who was forced out of his pocket all night long.

Turning point: Osborne’s rushing touchdown with 4:31 to go in the first half put West Hall up 29-3, and broke any hopes of a Chestatee comeback. It came on the first play of a drive that began when Chestatee muffed the snap on a punt. The Spartans were able to start their drive on the Chestatee 9-yard line.

Next up: West Hall next travels to North Hall on Sept. 11, while Chestatee hosts Pepperell. Chestatee beat Pepperell 24-19 last season. West Hall topped North Hall 38-0.

West Hall was so solid in its execution against Chestatee that the Spartans even turned mistakes into points Friday night.

Tyrese Osborne scored a touchdown on the ground and through the air, Kwon Williams and Hykeem Bennett added scores, and Ashun Favorite returned an interception back 90 yards to lead West Hall (2-0) to a 42-3 win.

Following Chestatee’s lone field goal in the first quarter that cut the lead to 14-3, the Spartans drove 80 yards in five minutes in the second quarter to tack on Williams’ score. That was followed by Anthony Lotti running in a two-point conversion despite muffing the snap on the point after.

“They’re really starting to really jell together,” said West Hall coach Tony Lotti. “We’re going to enjoy this win tonight, because I like what I saw from the effort and the focus. I’m proud with how we prepared for this game.”

West Hall scored 28 straight points from the second quarter onward, and recovered three of Chestatee’s seven fumbles in the blowout win that puts the War Eagles (0-2) still searching for a win.

West Hall kicker Israel Lopez nailed field goals from 29 and 25 yards in the win.

The game was delayed for nearly 20 minutes late in the third quarter when Chestatee running back Jay Mays was knocked out following a 6-yard rush on the near sideline.

The Chestatee football Twitter account later informed followers that Mays was being kept overnight in a local hospital for precautionary reasons, saying in a tweet that Mays had “suffered a chipped vertebra in his neck and a major concussion.”

Mays was tackled out of bounds near the Chestatee sideline with 3:21 left in the quarter. Coaches and medical staff attended to Mays near the 45-yard line.

A Hall County ambulance took Mays off after about 15 minutes. Chestatee backup quarterback Logan Cates said after the game that Mays had gotten to his feet following the tackle, then fell to the ground.

His head was stabilized on the stretcher as he was loaded into the ambulance.

West Hall coach Tony Lotti said Mays had been moving slightly on the sideline, but the medical staff told him to lie still as a precaution.

Mays was taken off the field to a standing ovation by both crowds. The senior move-in from Buford led the War Eagles with 29 rushing yards on nine carries.

West Hall dominated Chestatee from both the air and the ground in an encouragingly solid performance for Lotti’s growing team. The Spartans topped the War Eagles in both rushing yards (145-55) and passing yards (155-16), noticeably helped by the contributions of junior quarterback Jacob Satterfield.

The second-year starter (8-of-13 passing) tossed back-to-back touchdown passes to Bennett and Osborne that put West Hall up by two scores before Chestatee was able to answer.

“We’ve worked a lot on the passing game, we’ve been working well with the receivers, making sure that clicks,” said Satterfield. “We knew they’d attack the run game, so we want to show them something different.”

Ortega’s field goal on the next Chestatee drive cut the lead to 11 heading into the second quarter.

But that was as close as the contest got when West Hall converted two fourth-down situations two drives later to set up Williams for a 4-yard rush into the left side of the end zone. Williams (seven carries for 36 yards) somersaulted over his blocker on his way past the pylon.

Senior punter Lotti was able to recover a 2-point conversion when he picked up an awry snap and dashed toward the right edge of the end zone.

“We had a great week of practice that helped us out a lot,” said Osborne (4 carries for 26 yards, 1 reception for 32 yards). “We got all of our chances and we capitalized on them.”

The War Eagles also had their fair share of mistakes. Following a 3-and-out with 6:05 left to play in the first half, Chestatee muffed its snap for a punt, which led to West Hall regaining possession on the Chestatee 9-yard line.

Osborne was nearly untouched when he cut outside on West Hall’s first play from scrimmage to make it 29-3.

The Spartans have recovered eight fumbles in the last two games, including five in last week’s lopsided win over Johnson.

Backup quarterback Storm Yarbrough was thrown into the starting job for Chestatee after Logan Cates suffered a fractured collarbone in last week’s loss to Flowery Branch. The sophomore finished on 3-of-11 passing with an interception, but showed both speed and awareness to dodge several would-be sack attempts.

His pick was costly, however. Favorite read Yarbrough’s eyes as he threw a pass through the middle in the third quarter, snagged it on the 10-yard line, then rumbled 90 yards down the sideline for West Hall’s final score of the game.

Notes: Gainesville native Frank Crane was honored before Friday’s game for not missing a single Chestatee middle school or high school football game since the school’s inception in 2002. He typically sits near the 50-yard line at War Eagle Stadium.

In his honor, the school named his seat the “Frank Crane Spot” and presented him with an honorary 2015 Touchdown Club membership by Troy Gean, the president of the Chestatee Touchdown Booster Club.
