Letter: State legal community mourns Judge Mallis

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I wish to extend condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of retired DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Robert P. Mallis on his recent passing.

During his distinguished career of more than 40 years in the legal profession and the judiciary, Judge Mallis was engaged in the private practice of law in DeKalb County prior to his appointment to the Superior Court bench in 1988. He served as chief judge of the DeKalb Superior Court and administrative judge of the 4th Judicial District and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Superior Court Judges and the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia.

A past president of the DeKalb Bar Association, Judge Mallis also served his church and community in many capacities, including as chairman of the Holy Innocents Episcopal School Board of Trustees. He assumed responsibility as a senior Superior Court judge upon his retirement from full-time service in 2005 and was a resident of Gainesville at the time of his passing.

All members of the State Bar of Georgia can be inspired by the lifetime of service of Judge Mallis. We appreciate his many contributions toward strengthening the foundations of our justice system, which protects the rights and liberties of all Americans.

Patrick T. O’Connor
President, State Bar of Georgia
