Repairs on a closed section of Sardis Road in northwest Hall County are going slower than expected. Ken Rearden, Hall County public works and utilities director, said “if the weather is good, we’re looking maybe two weeks out.” The washed-out portion between the Sardis compactor site and Sardis Elementary School has been closed since heavy rains on Oct. 2 caused the damage.

A section of Sardis Road that’s been closed since heavy rains Oct. 2 could be reopened in a couple of weeks if work goes as hoped.

Repairs could cost upward of $500,000.

“If the weather is good, we’re looking (at) maybe two weeks out,” said Ken Rearden, Hall County public works and utilities director.

Pipe work at the site, which is between the Sardis compactor site and Sardis Elementary School, should be finished this week, he said.

“Then, we’ve got to go in and pour (concrete) headwalls ... and they’ll have to cure,” Rearden said.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as our crews make these repairs,” Hall County Administrator Randy Knighton has said. “The safety of our citizens is always our first priority, and the closure of this roadway is crucial to ensuring their protection.”

Motorists in the area can use Fran Mar Drive as a detour around the washed-out section of Sardis Road.

Hall Schools Superintendent Will Schofield said bus routes were altered for students at Sardis Elementary and Chestatee Academy.
