Juli Clay will be Gainesville’s next council member, taking the Ward 5 seat held by Ruth Bruner, who previously announced she wouldn’t seek re-election.
Who is she: Clay is the assistant vice president of executive programs at Brenau University.
How she reacted: “It was just very humbling, and my hope is just that I can make Gainesville proud. And I hope that people see that they made the right decision. It was very exciting, and honestly, I’ve just felt the support and graciousness of our community for the last three months.”
On the issues: Clay hopes to focus on smart growth and involve stakeholders such as businesses, nonprofits and local schools in decisions that will affect them. She said she sees potential for redevelopment in downtown and midtown. “The community has already made strides in downtown and midtown, and I think that that effort will continue and we’ll be able to see really great things happening because of that connectivity between downtown and midtown, and being able to expand the usability of our intown area,” she told The Times in October.
What’s next: Clay will join the Council on Jan. 7.
