A Gainesville man was charged with homicide by vehicle after hitting an 84-year-old man as he stood in his front yard in Buford.
The victim, Burl S. Rape, died Monday at the scene.
Gwinnett County Police charged 34-year-old Martin A. Taylor. They say he was driving a Chevrolet Silverado north on Little Mill Road in Buford around 11:15 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway on the right grassy shoulder.
Authorities say Rape was standing in front of his house when he was struck by the truck as it left the roadway.
“The owner of the house was standing at the end of his driveway,” said Gwinnett County Cpl. Ed Ritter. “The owner of the house was subsequently killed from the impact of the collision.”
Police also charged Taylor with failure to maintain lane. He was arrested and was transported to the Gwinnett County Jail.
Ritter said there’s no indication the driver was under the influence.
“It’s certainly out of the ordinary. Just a bad set of circumstances there,” Ritter said.
