Pizza Hut has closed its 40-year-old sit-down restaurant in Oakwood, but opened a new, carryout and delivery-only store nearby.

B.R. White, the city’s community development director, said Monday, Jan. 28, he didn’t know when the old restaurant, located at 3815 Mundy Mill Road, closed.

But the new store, which is just south in the Merchants Crossing Shopping Center off Mundy Mill Road and Mundy Mill Drive, opened in October.

The new Pizza Hut store referred questions to the franchisee, NPC International Inc., based in Pittsburg, Kansas. NPC officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

The old Pizza Hut is near Thurmon Tanner Parkway and Walmart, and it existed before both, offering a daily lunch buffet.

The restaurant also predates University of North Georgia’s Gainesville campus, which is across the street, but was there when the school was known as Gainesville Junior College.

Growth swarmed the area around the old restaurant over the years.

Mundy Mill Road was widened to six lanes in front of the restaurant and over to Interstate 985. Thurmon Tanner Parkway was built between Oakwood and Flowery Branch, creating one of the area’s busiest intersections at Mundy Mill.

And restaurants also sprang up in the area, including a nearby Captain D’s, Wendy’s and Steak ‘n Shake.
